There are over 3600 historic graveyards in Ireland with up to 1,400 years of history carved into the headstones that have been placed there over the years. In the past year the ‘Historic Graves Project’ has helped local community groups survey 6,734 graves in 79 graveyards, recording not only the names, locations and inscriptions on those headstones, but also recording local stories from local people about their local cemeteries.
As part of this exciting project, the Knockmealdown Active steering committee, in partnership with the local communities living along the length of the Knockmealdown mountain range, hopes to train local volunteers on how to record the information contained within their local historic graveyards.
Before the group proceeds any further it wants to gauge the level of interest from people who might be willing to help with this project. If there is enough interest from local communities, Knockmealdown Active hopes to be in a position to organise the basic professional training necessary to conduct the survey as well as supplying cameras and other specialised recording equipment.
